I'm a bit of a castle pedant. I think they should have some defensive purpose to qualify. A big house with a name doesn't cut it with me.
However this afternoon I took a walk to the romantic ruin of Slains Castle - properly a country house built with castle like features.
And enjoy the fake stone!
Tower houses were 15th century bling. They usually had a more comfortable manor house attached but these rarely survive. However this afternoon I took a walk to the romantic ruin of Slains Castle - properly a country house built with castle like features.

there were plans to make it into apartments in 2007, I think but I guess those plans were scrapped...interesting the connection with Bram Stoker And his writing of Dracula...you certainly have some beautiful old castles in Scotland.
